The Ford Police Interceptor Utility is a purpose-built line of Ford vehicles engineered specifically for law enforcement — not a civilian Explorer with lights added. Every Interceptor is rigorously tested for pursuits, extended idling, high-speed response, and the daily demands of police work, and shares its underlying platform with the Ford Explorer while differing significantly in structure, safety testing, and equipment.
Three Pursuit-Rated Engines
Series 500A. All AWD, all with a 10-speed police-calibrated automatic.

All AWD. Non-hybrid engines delete regenerative braking, add a 250-amp alternator, and use a 21.4-gal tank (vs. 19-gal on the hybrid). EPA fuel economy figures are still pending Ford's publication. Speed limiters (121 or 131 mph) available as an option on any engine.

Prior-generation performance for reference: the 3.0L EcoBoost delivered 400 hp / 415 lb-ft (148 mph top speed); the 3.3L Hybrid delivered 318 hp / 322 lb-ft (137 mph top speed). 2027 figures are not yet published by Ford — we'll update this the moment they are.

Non-Hybrid 3.3L V6 Delayed
This existing engine option returns for 2027, but availability is delayed until later in the model year — order timing will depend on when it opens up.
Upfitters Prep Package (67D)
New single package bundling front/tail/rear lighting solutions with pre-wiring, a 100W siren/speaker, and more — replaces ordering several packages separately.
Configurable Daytime Running Lamps
DRLs are now switchable on/off through the instrument cluster, no longer permanently on.

Structural reinforcement keeps the fuel tank and hybrid battery secure even in a stopped highway-speed collision.

270-degree motion detection around the vehicle; automatically locks doors and raises windows if a threat is detected while parked.

Level III+ tested to NIJ Standard 0108.01 Level III plus LAPD special threat rounds; Level IV+ adds NIJ Level IV protection. Driver-only or both front doors.
Manual Police Pursuit Mode
Steering-wheel-mounted switch instantly shifts to pursuit calibration — holds gears longer, sharpens throttle response.

Ford restricts these vehicles to government fleets by default. Private security companies can be approved — but it's a case-by-case process, not an off-the-shelf order.
Not a Standard Purchase
Ford requires special, case-by-case permission before a private (non-government) company can purchase a Police Interceptor Utility. An order can't be placed until that approval is in place.
